Reviews
We stumbled upon this restaurant by chance. Both my friend and I have been to Zimbabwe, so this was a particular treat. We had oodles of questions but, unfortunately, the staff on duty were not from Zimbabwe. Still, we had a nice time, it has a nice atmosphere and good food.
I really like the decor and ambience this place has created. It’s got a neat mix of outdoor rural flair but is still nice and clean. Food was good and I’d recommend the African soup dishes. The Pickled onions were delicious as well as the spicy beans. Oh, and also the fresh strawberry lemonade. You could see the strawberry seeds at the bottom so you know it’s fresh pressed.
Absolutely loved this place so much that I'm sitting in the parking lot writing this review. Firstly, the food was incredible. We had the shrimp kebobs to start. Jumbo shrimp well seasoned and paired with tomato and red onion. I had the dovi tofu, my sister had the piri piri chicken with collards and the sadza. All of it was amazing. We also tried the magwinyas -both stuffed and sweet and they were amazing. They also made some sweet potato samosas last minute fresh for us. We had the honor of meeting the owner who was so kind. We had the sweetest server (Yolanda I believe?) and she was so charming and provided wonderful service. We are so glad we came here and we're looking forward to returning!
Zweli's was a great experience. The food was fresh and delicious. Jollof rice was a bit dry but still flavourful. The samosas were crispy and seasoned well. The plantain was also good. My braised oxtail was tender and juicy. Some people in the party didn't want spicy food and the staff was very accommodating with the request. The food took a while to come out but everything seemed fresh.
Huge room for improvement.
Customer service: phenomenal Miss Yolanda was polite and attentive. She really ran the place.
Food: The meal was a bit much for what I paid. The beans was a huge portion but tasted like baked beans with slices of carrots. I ordered the squash and zucchini but they were spicy. It was only described on the menu as grilled and I thought it would bring the heat down from the beans and chicken but it did not. So it was just a very spicy plate. Nothing to cool down your palate from all that spice but I felt the spicy was unnecessary on the zucchini and squash.
Atmosphere: my chair and a few others needed the foot bar pit back in. The seat is wanky and all over the place. I had to grab another chair so I can get comfortable. The floors were a bit grubby, the tables could use a wipe down.
I felt the connection with Zimbabwe is hugely missed because you see the African decor and some magazines up front but the logo yells pizza, the menu doesn't tie anything to Zimbabwe as far as visuals (show how the food looks, create a company voice) and was basic. Doesn't have photos or real ties to the owners and the culture. Kind of a bummer.
Then I was in shock to hear the restaurant was opening another location. I feel like this establishment needs a little more fleshed out. We'll see.
Great food, great presentation, and most of all, great people! The space itself is a little plain, but I like that you can see the kitchen and parking is easy. Will definitely be back! Dovi chicken and peri peri chicken pictured below. Beef samosas were yummy as well.
Really enjoyed the food here! I came on a weeknight and there was no wait for a table. I got the oxtail stew and it was incredibly flavorful! My partner got the dovi chicken and he really enjoyed it to, although I definitely liked the stew a lot more. The plantains made a good appetizer and we enjoyed trying the jollof rice and the sadza as well. Definitely recommend trying it at some point if you're in the triangle area! Service was a bit slow even though it didn't seem busy, but server was very friendly.
The waitress was very nice. I ordered a half chicken and when I cut into it the middle was completely raw. I sent it back and they said they'd recook it but brought me a smaller piece to eat on the same plate that had raw chicken on it. I asked for a new plate and new rice so they switched it. The waitress was very apologetic and they gave my friend and I extra donuts for the trouble. I barely ate any chicken because I was grossed out by the experience so I was kind of disappointed they didn't offer to take it off the bill. I would maybe go back again for brunch, but will not be ordering chicken again.
